Wow, just passed the halfway mark for the A to Z blog challenge. I’ve gotten a little behind. Hoping to catch up this week.
Today’s topic is New School Year. Now, there are a few things that are great about heading back to when you’re a little kid. For instance:
- New School Year = New Clothes! When I got a little older I developed an aversion to shopping. But it wasn’t always that way. When I was little, I loved getting new clothes, even new DRESSES. (I don’t even own a dress now…) I remember getting my first pair of Levi’s – they were corduroys and I thought I was the coolest kid on the block. We always started the new year with a few new outfits.
- New School Year = New Lunch Box! Now that I think of it, I’m not so sure why this was exciting. It meant I had a room temperature sandwich for lunch every day. This was back before ice packs. Okay, maybe I have this one in the wrong column…
- New School Year = New Class! When I moved to Louisiana I was with the same class every year…there was only one class per grade. Not so in New York. Each year we were in a new class with a few familiar faces from previous years, but there were always lots of new kids to meet. Did I mention what an introvert I am? Hm. Maybe this isn’t in the plus column either.
- New School Year = New School Supplies! Okay, this one is solidly in the “Win” column. I LOVE office/school supplies. Anybody out there with me? I mean, give me 2 hours and drop me off at Office Depot. I’m happy as a clam. Just don’t make me go to the mall. Anyway, we had these things called book bags but they didn’t look like knapsacks. They looked like briefcases and they couldn’t hold forty pounds of books like today. Let’s see, I had a pencil box with some goodies in it: fat jumbo pencils, erasers, paste, blunt scissors. And we had these brownish glue bottles with rubber tips. Remember those? And composition notebooks…I could go on and on.
Looking at my list I’d say starting the new school year was a mixed bag. Lots of cool new stuff, but some not so good things too. I love learning. Every so often I get a wild idea to take some classes at the local university. Maybe brush up on my French. Maybe take some World History…but pay attention this time. But then I think, you know, it’s the learning I love. Not the school.
So, hello YouTube. Hello History Channel. Hello books, books, and more books. Sorry, school year. Maybe next time.
