Comfort Zone - A Jayne MacVicar Mystery
I was five months into my retirement when I stumbled across the dead body of Allison Bennett. Displayed in the vacant alley like a gift, she was wrapped in cardboard boxes, surrounded with empty tuna cans and other refuse. I didn’t know her name yet, only that she was white, early thirties, with her hair pulled back in a ponytail. She had a no-nonsense look about her, like a woman on her way to work.
Manner of death was homicide, there was no doubt in my mind. She had a blindfold over her eyes, gag over her mouth, and there was a gaping wound on her head, probably from a blunt instrument. Of course, the autopsy would have to confirm.
I was stunned. Not so much by the body, or even the nature of the crime. But stunned to find a murdered girl in my new city of Comfort, Louisiana. With a population just over fifteen thousand and a relatively low crime rate, this was a statistical outlier.
